When Brennan was about 6 years old I switched him over to saying "big boy prayers" at night. Our standard bedtime prayer was the classic "Now I lay me..." but I wanted to start teaching him how to pray based on the model Jesus laid out in the Lord's Prayer.I also knew that he wasn't going to understand what we were saying, even with the NIV text, so I made this up and it's worked pretty well. Braden and Ethan say it now with us. I think Brennan's getting to the point where we can switch it up a little so in a little while I might come up with something a bit less little-kid-ish.
It goes like this:
Dear God,
Thank You for today.
Thank You for the fun we had.
[at this point we name some specific individual things that he's thankful for from the day]
Thank You for giving us everything we need.
Forgive us for the things we've done wrong.
Help us to forgive others when they do things we don't like.
Keep us away from bad stuff and protect us from the devil.
For we know You can do all these things, because You are God and You are strong, and You love us and we love You.
Special prayers for all our special prayers.
[here we say special prayers for individual prayer requests we have]
God bless all my friends, and all my family.
Amen
